"It was my honor to know the remarkable man, some of whose boyhood stories appear in this book, during the last 40 years of his life when he was my father- in-law. He was born Joseph Leo Brown in 1893 in what was called Wild Cherry Canyon in the Canyon de Chelly. His mother was a Navajo of the T'a chini clan, and his father was Hopi. He grew up to be a clear-thinking man, whose character, leadership, and contributions to his community of Red Lake, Arizona, where he settled, were recognized in the 25 years he served as Red Lake chapter president.
